The wonderful literary magazine SignificantObjects.com published my Laikas story earlier this year. I knew shortly after that Fantagraphics would be publishing a book of 100 Significant Objects stories and recently found out that they wanted to include my story.
The webmagazine adds value to objects by having writers pen them into stories. It is an experiment in story and its worth run by Rob Walker and Josh Glenn. Here is Rob Walker speaking about SignificantObjects.com:
The story and the object were auctioned on eBay and the proceeds given to a great charity. I was worried that the buyer had actually wanted the defaced ashtray for US$30 but she wrote me a kind letter which reassured me!
I do not know the exact writer roster for the book but I expect to be in good company. The site has featured stories by Lydia Millet, Jonathan Lethem, Chris Adrian, Sheila Heti and many more shining stars. Oh, and the book will be illustrated by, I am assuming, some of Fantagraphics impressive artist list. Among others, Fantagraphics has published Joe Sacco, R. Crumb, and Chip Kidd. I expect it will be a beautiful book. Expect to see it in 2011!
